Endangered Underground Railroad Sites In Illinois
Prior to the end of slavery many Africans sought freedom by means of escape, through the aid of both black and white people, working through a hidden network called the Underground Railroad. Today many of these sites are in danger of being destroyed or forgotten.

The Illinois Preservation Agency estimates some five hundred properties in Illinois associated with the Underground Railroad. We also know of Reverse Underground Railroad Sites. It is within Freedom Trails mission to call attention, and give rise to the preservation of as many of these sites as possible. Unfortunately, after over 300 years of history has passed, many of these properties have been lose and many of those still standing are in poor condition, sometimes in private hands, out of the reach of the public. From time to time, Freedom Trails will list endangered site pertinent to the African American experience in Illinois. Not all of the sites are in trouble because of neglect. One such site is the Roots House in Tamaroa. We need a strategy to preserve Root's legacy and Calvin and Jean Ibendahl's dedicated care.
